Waratah

Waratah, Tasmania Australia 7321

Waratah is a small town on the edge of the Tarkine wilderness and was once home to the richest tin mine in the Southern Hemisphere. Today, the town’s rich mining past has long since ended and the local museum with its collection of artifacts, photos and stories reveals the living conditions of those early pioneers and miners.

On the southern side of town is Lake Waratah, a pleasant place for a picnic with BBQs, ducks and the occasional platypus. There are enjoyable bushwalks and a waterfall in the centre of town makes for another good picnic spot, with sweeping views across the Tarkine forest.

Waratah is a 4.5-hr drive from Hobart (385 km) and a 1 hr 20-min drive (108 km) from Devonport.
