Mawbanna is a small rural town located around 30 minutes from Stanley, where lush farmlands meet the cool, shaded beauty of Tasmania’s temperate rainforest. The area is home to three memorable attractions: Blue Hills Honey, Dip Falls and The Big Tree.
Blue Hills Honey is a family-run honey farm where visitors can discover the world of Tasmanian honey. Set amongst the beautiful northwest landscape, the farm showcases locally produced honey and offers an opportunity to learn about bees, beekeeping and the importance of these remarkable pollinators.
As you drive into Mawbanna, the landscape changes from rolling green farmland to dense rainforest. Just off the Bass Highway at Black River, turn south onto Mawbanna Road. The road takes you past Blue Hills Honey and Café and onwards to the Dip Falls car park, where long-vehicle parking is available.
Dip Falls is a spectacular natural feature, where the Dip River cascades 34 metres over two tiers of striking black, hexagonal basalt rock into the pool below. From the car park side of the Dip River Bridge, 207 steps lead down to a viewing platform at the base of the falls, offering an impressive perspective of the cascading water and basalt formations. On the opposite side of the bridge, a wheelchair-accessible viewing platform provides views from above across both tiers of the falls.
Just one kilometre beyond Dip Falls is another of Mawbanna’s natural treasures — The Big Tree. This impressive stringybark (Eucalyptus obliqua) is estimated to be around 400 years old. Standing approximately 65 metres tall and measuring 16 metres in circumference at its base, it is a remarkable example of Tasmania’s ancient forest landscape.
From honey and farmland to rainforest, waterfalls and towering trees, Mawbanna offers a wonderful opportunity to experience some of the rugged natural beauty of Tasmania’s northwest.
