The seaside town of Port Sorell is on the picturesque Rubicon River estuary and offers great boating, sea kayaking, water-skiing and fishing and is close to some of the best natural wildlife viewing opportunities in Tasmania.
The town itself consists of little more than a few shops and a small number of holiday homes behind the sand dunes. Its population of over 2,000 increases significantly in the summer months when holidaymakers flock to camping grounds and shacks; its boat ramp is the busiest on the North West Coast.
The local golf course is also one of the most picturesque in the state.
There’s lots of wildlife here as well and it’s a great place to watch little penguins waddle up the beach each evening.
Nearby is the Narawntapu National Park, one of Tasmania’s best places to view wildlife. The park abounds with kangaroos, wallabies, wombats and Tasmanian devils. It includes an historic farm, a complex of inlets, small islands, headlands, wetlands, dunes and lagoons, all with an amazing variety of plants and animals. Camping is available.
Port Sorell is a 1-hr drive (77 km) north from Launceston and a 20-min drive (20 km) east of Devonport and only 15-mins drive to Latrobe.
