A North West Guide to Playgrounds

22 August 2022 Hamish Palmer

Like most things on the North West coast, we’re spoiled for choice when it comes to the best playgrounds for the family to enjoy. We’ve compiled a list of 5 of our favourite playgrounds on the North West for families and big kids alike.

1. Burnie Waterfront Playground

Situated in one of Burnie’s most popular locations along the waterfront, the playground provides a cloth-shaded area with small slides, bridges and fun ropes to cross. This little gem is located right near the surf club and great coffee for the parents. A great road trip pitstop, stretch your legs by walking along the boardwalk, stop for lunch at the beachfront restaurant or settle down in a picnic shelter or grassed space. Just keep an eye on the octopus sculptures, the water will squirt you when you least expect it!

2. Wynyard Playground

Wynyard’s bright and colourful playground features multiple large slides with the unusual spiral slide the focal point. The main structure is a castle-like build with twists and turns and fun features that you can get lost in. In the fully fenced area, you’ll find swings, a zip line, shaded areas, amenities and benches to accommodate everyone. Located right on the waterfront and right next to a handy takeaway shop, the Wynyard playground is a full day out for the whole family.

3. Penguin Playground

How could we mention playgrounds on the North West coast without a nod to the giant penguin located in… you guessed it, Penguin. An icon and a huge tourist attraction situated right next to the play equipment, the kids will love hanging out with the big flightless bird while you watch the waves roll in and check out the top tier shopping & coffee shop across the road and along the main street.

4. Mersey Bluff Beach - Devonport Playground

Sitting on the popular Mersey Bluff Beach in Devonport, the blue hued play equipment features slides, ramps, and equipment for climbing. The grassed area that overlooks the beautiful bluff beach makes this a great spot to sit and simply enjoy the view. Sealed walking and cycling tracks encourage biking along the waterfront, and you can bring your own snags for the BBQs. Great coffee is tucked inside the neighbouring Surf Life Saving Club building, so you’ll stay caffeinated for the play date. For the big kids or the kids at heart, the skateboard park and sports grounds are also just nearby.

5. ANZAC park Ulverstone

Any trip to Ulverstone is never complete without a trip to the giant climbable rocket ship. If the rocket wasn’t enough to get the excitement levels up, the giant slide should do the trick. Views of the Leven River and plenty of space (pun intended) to spread out, the park is a short walk from the centre of town. The perfect spot to enjoy coffee or lunch while the kids are entertained for hours.
