Franklin Manor was built in 1896 for Captain Edward Miles, Strahan’s harbour master, and a good deal of what he built is still here: stained glass, high ceilings, cedar joinery, and gardens planted more than a century ago.
It now offers boutique accommodation, with large lounges, open fires and a billiard room where guests tend to gather in the evening. Adults only.
Breakfast is served in Charlotte’s, their restaurant, which looks out over the private veranda and the gardens. Charlotte’s is an award-winning dining experience offering French technique with Tasmanian produce, and it is open to the public as well as to guests.
Strahan sits at the edge of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Gordon River cruises leave from the wharf a few minutes’ walk away, the West Coast Wilderness Railway runs from Regatta Point, and Ocean Beach is a short drive.
