Before you set off
Plan your trip to North West Tasmania by booking the ferry, the car and a bed for night one.
Most people arrive in Devonport Tasmania, then head west along the coast or inland to Cradle Mountain. Here’s where to work out how you get here, how you get around, who to ask on the ground and which itinerary suits the days you have.

Sail from Geelong and roll off in Devonport Tasmania with your own car, caravan or campervan. Or fly direct from Melbourne into Devonport or Burnie Wynyard. Coming from Launceston or Hobart is a drive west along the A1.

The towns, lookouts and farm gates are spread along a long coast, so wheels help. Bring your own or hire one, and check the coach routes before you rely on them. Devonport Tasmania to Stanley is about an hour and 45 minutes, if you can resist every lookout.

Ready-made days with realistic drive times, what’s open and where to eat. Choose a suggested itinerary or borrow the parts you like. If you’d rather start with ideas than a schedule, the travel stories cover food, wildlife and small towns.
Local teams in towns across the region who know what’s open today, which road is clearer and where the weather is heading. Handy for maps, bookings and a second opinion.
It’s the North West coast of Tasmania, running west from Devonport Tasmania through Ulverstone, Penguin, Burnie and Wynyard to Stanley, Smithton and Arthur River. Cradle Mountain sits inland to the south.
Two to three days covers Devonport Tasmania, Cradle Mountain and the coast out to Stanley without rushing. Four or five gives you room to add takayna / Tarkine and the far west. Itineraries & Ideas has day-by-day plans to start from.
Summer is the warmest and busiest, so book early. Autumn and spring are quieter on the roads and in town. Winter is cold, so pack for it. Whatever the month, bring layers, because the weather changes quickly.
The Spirit of Tasmania and hire cars, especially for summer, school holidays and long weekends. Beds are fewer and the gaps between towns longer out towards Arthur River, so book those early as well.
If you’re off the ferry, Devonport Tasmania makes sense. There are motels, hotels and holiday houses close to the terminal, and you can head west the next morning. Where to Stay has the full list by town.
Visitor information centres run across the region, including Devonport Tasmania, Sheffield, Stanley and Cradle Mountain. Staff can help with maps, bookings and what’s open that day. Check opening hours before making a special trip.
