Frequently asked questions

Where should I stay in North West Tasmania?

It depends where you’re heading. Devonport suits the first night off the ferry, Cradle Mountain and Sheffield suit the mountain, Stanley is the town most people plan a night around, and Burnie is a handy stop in between. Each town tile on this page links to places to stay in that town and the area around it.

Where should I stay on my first night after the Spirit of Tasmania?

Devonport Tasmania is the easy choice. It’s where the Spirit of Tasmania lands, with motels, hotels and holiday houses close to the terminal. Stay there for night one, then head west.

Where should I stay near Cradle Mountain?

The gateway to Cradle Mountain Lake St Clair National Park has good stays in the valley. Sheffield, on the road up, is often easier on the budget.

Do I need to book accommodation ahead?

Yes, and especially over west. There are fewer beds and longer gaps between towns around Smithton and Arthur River, so book early. Summer and school holidays fill up everywhere, so book ahead for those too.

Can I stay in a caravan or motorhome?

Yes. Caravan and holiday parks run along the coast from Devonport Tasmania to Smithton. Wynyard is a sensible base for caravans and motorhomes, because Boat Harbour has hardly any parking and Sisters Beach is a day visit. Camping run by Parks and Wildlife books separately.

Are there pet-friendly places to stay?

Plenty of places in the North West take dogs, but each property sets its own rules, so check before you book. Most national parks don’t allow dogs, so plan your walks around that.
