What takes your fancy?
The North West has more to do than most people plan for.
Rainforest walks, penguin colonies, convict history, mural towns, mountain lakes and a coastline that keeps changing its mind. Pick a starting point below, or scroll to the full list and filter by town.
Coast, rainforest and alpine tracks, from a 20 minute stroll to a full week hike. Start with the ones that suit your fitness level.

Farm gates, cellar doors and breweries, strung together by one trail so you don’t have to do the planning. Browse more under Eat and Drink.

Little penguins, devils, wombats and more than a few wallabies. Wildlife is best sighted at the edges of the day, and best from a respectful distance.

Convict, maritime and pioneer sites in towns that haven’t tidied the past away. Handy for those days when the weather takes a turn.

Coastline, caves, forests and falls, spread out along the drive.

Cradle Mountain, takayna / Tarkine and the parks and reserves in between. There’s plenty to see, so check conditions and pass requirements before you go.

Trails for every level, from easy coastal rides to ones that require a helmet and a positive attitude.
Walking in Cradle Mountain and takayna / Tarkine country, watching little penguins come ashore at dusk, climbing The Nut at Stanley, and driving the coast out to Table Cape. The Cradle to Coast Tasting Trail covers the food side.
Little penguins at Burnie and Stanley, platypus around Latrobe and the Mersey River, and wombats at Cradle Mountain. Dusk and dawn give you the best odds.
A car makes it far easier, because most attractions are spread along the coast and inland. See Getting Around for hire and transport options.
Most Tasmanian national parks, Cradle Mountain included, need a parks pass.
Heritage sites, cellar doors and cafes. The Tasting Trail works in any weather.
